Never pass up the opportunity to learn something new. Here are some facts about snakes in Florida; see how many you know.
Not all snakes are bad. Snakes are part of our ecological environment. Some snakes may benefit to your home, your garden, and your business, because they eat slugs, beetles, rodents. Some snakes even eat other snakes. There are 50 species of snakes found in Florida, and only 6 are venomous and a danger to humans and pets.
Snakes generally avoid humans when they can, but a snake may bite if someone gets too close, or if they feel threatened or cornered.
You may find snakes just about anywhere, but it’s more probable to find snakes in overgrown areas with high grass, near lakes, drainage ditches, or retention ponds, in swampy areas, or under rocks or logs.
If you need to go for a walk outside, in one of these places where there may be snakes:
- Take a walking pole and tap ahead of you as you walk, to give a snake warning where you intend to walk. Given that warning, most snakes will try to avoid you.
- Wear long pants and hiking boots.
- Watch the ground you as you walk. All snakes are cold-blooded reptiles; they lay in the Sun to keep warm.
If you know you’re going to an area where snakes are often found, please review some symptoms of snake bites, and some basic snake bite first aid.
Although most snakes in Florida are not poisonous, avoid picking up or attempting to play with any snake unless you have been properly trained how to identify snakes and how to safely handle them. If you are not sure whether a snake is venomous or not, we recommend that you just stay away from them.
Do you know why we don’t see many snakes during the winter time? In the fall, snakes like to hibernate underground or in buildings for protection from the cold of winter.
As snakes grow, they shed their skin, so when you find a snake skin in your home or business, or on your property, you know a snake has been there.
A bite from any snake is scary and can be painful, but the bite of a venomous snake is a Medical Emergency!
